Hawthorn (Crataegus)

Hawthorn is a very useful deciduous shrub with short sharp thorns. Makes impenetrable hedge and responds well to regular pruning. Good as a medium height (1.2 metre) hedge to deter trespassing. Mix with beech to create a more natural look. If allowed to grow unchecked it will become a large bush laden with red haws – an ideal food source for winter migratory birds.
